INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR or EMPLOYEE

Most work at home “employees” are actually considered Independent Contractors. While there are some companies that will hire you as an actual “employee” (and these companies are on our work from home companies pages), who WILL provide standard employment benefits such as vacation and health insurance, most companies are looking to hire Independent Contractors (also known as IC’s). An Independent Contractor is simply an employee who assumes all responsibility for their own taxes (taxes are NOT taken out of your check), who does not receive standard employee benefits, and who signs a contract with the company saying that they will represent the company professionally, will work a certain number of hours each week or month (depending upon the company’s requirements), has all the required equipment, has a work space set aside in the home that is quite with no pet or child noise in the background, and who has all the required experience and skill sets, etc…

As an Independent Contractor, you will get to set your own hours. You will be able to work as many hours as you want as long as you meet the minimum required hours (can be anywhere from 10 hours per month to 20 hours per week). You will be able to sign on with more than one company, thus giving you more “security”.

Being an Independent Contractor myself, I highly recommend it. Be sure to check with your tax consultant for any specific tax requirements for your state. For example, some states might require you to have a business license before you can become in Independent Contractor.
