AVERAGE WORK FROM HOME
PAY RATE
Most work from home jobs pay
between $8.00 per hour and $15.00 per hour based on job description
and skill set required for the job. Some work from home jobs pay as
much as $20.00 per hour and some are even salary (the higher paying
jobs usually require highly skilled people or require a college
education). Some companies pay a guaranteed hourly rate plus bonuses
(if up-selling is involved, while other companies simply pay you per
talk minute, plus bonuses.
Example of a guaranteed minimum
pay rate: Company pays a guaranteed minimum of $8.50 per hour. They
can pay you more than that, but they WON’T pay you less. If you are
scheduled for an hour, they WILL pay you $8.50 for that hour. Let’s
say the rate per talk minute is 28cents. This is the amount they pay
for each and every minute you are talking to a customer. So let’s say
you spend 20 minutes of an hour long shift talking to a customer. 20
minutes X 28cents is only $5.60. So for this hour, you would earn
$8.50 (the guaranteed minimum). BUT, let’s say you talk for 60
minutes. Instead of the guaranteed $8.50 minimum, you would earn
$16.80 for that hour. This is 60 minutes X 28cents, thus $16.80.
Example with up-selling bonus:
So let’s say you make the guaranteed minimum of $8.50 for an hour but
this company pays a bonus of 75cents per sell. Let’s say you made
four sells for that hour (maybe you are booking airline reservations
and four people booked a reservation). So you get paid 75cents X 4
sells or $3.00. So you get paid $8.50 (the guaranteed minimum) PLUS
$3.00 (the bonus) total for that hour = $11.50.
Example of per talk minute ONLY
pay rate: Some companies pay for the time you are on the phone with a
customer and ONLY for that time (plus bonuses if up-selling is
involved). So if this company pays 28cents per talk minute and you
were on the phone for 60 minutes, then of course you would make $16.80
for that hour. BUT, let’s say it’s not peak season and you’re on the
phone for only 20 minutes, you would get just $5.60 for that hour.
Even worse, you could spend the hour staring at the computer screen
and not receiving a single call, and you’ve just dedicated an hour of
your time to that company for NOTHING. Now during peak seasons (like
summer if it’s a hotel company), you could make a ton of money from
these companies. Just keep in mind that although it might seem like
they have a higher “per talk minute rate” (because most of these
companies will offer higher rates for their talk minutes), your pay
scale can change drastically with the seasons or even the hours of the
day in some cases.
As you can see from the examples
above, work from home “call center” type jobs can vary greatly in
pay. Even a job with a “guaranteed hourly rate” can vary greatly from
shift to shift depending upon how much time you are on the phone and
if up-selling is involved, how many sells you made.
Most typist jobs will pay by the
word typed, usually around 5cents per word. If you get clear, crisp
dictations, you can make a killing. Thing to remember is sometimes
you will get dictations that are nearly impossible to understand and
can take what seems like forever to complete, thus making your hourly
rate go down. Most transcription companies work very closely with
their clients to insure that you DO get clear, crisp dictations.
Remember, for them, time is money.
Some jobs will pay “by the
job”. So this will be a set, previously agreed upon rate, for the
entire job. These jobs are usually website design or graphic design
type jobs.
